My work is self expressive, almost cathartic. Although it is very personal, I aim to convey emotions that are universal. I use etching with its vast array of mark making possibilities to communicate emotions that revolve around my family and friends. My images are somewhere between abstract and figurative and often whilst creating them there is a struggle between the two. Figures are erased or defined, emerging from the abstract. Etching for me is a practice which transcends disciplines, using elements of drawing, painting and sculpture. It is very important for me to have a tactile relationship with the chosen material, be it zinc, copper or steel, all of which have very different qualities.
