JANE HUMAN
Statement
The major theme of my work is the exploration of a sense of place. It is often
an interpretation of space in flux, influenced by light, weather, sound, of fixing
a fleeting moment or a series of viewpoints, the passing of time, transience
as opposed to the concrete. Recently I have become interested in the inter-tidal
zones around the UK, focusing particularly on Jersey which has one of the
greatest tidal ranges in Europe. From Initial drawings and studies on site, the
distillation through time away from that place, and development in the studio
results as much in landscapes of memory as of reality. Most of my print works
are monotypes and my working process very much underpins and informs my
work. Whilst formalising ideas to create an initial working structure, the ongoing
process of making the print is not predetermined and as layers of ink are built
and the work progresses, elements appear and are hidden, reflecting change,
shift and fluidity and mark the passage of time. Surface is extremely important
to me, as is the exploration of colour, the energy and gesture within the actual
mark-making - all are intrinsic to the resolution of the ideas.
